Cruise ships stop at the bottom of the old part of the city, which was founded in 1521 and is now officially declared a National Historic Zone. From the cruise pier, it is just a short walk into the city via uneven, cobblestone streets. Alternatively, taxis can be hailed in the street to take visitors into the capital. The old part of San Juan contains many 16th and 17th century buildings, which has been fully restored and refurbished in the original Spanish style.
