Discovered by Columbus, Santo Domingo is the New World's oldest colonial city, and many echoes of Conquistador times survive amid the cobbled streets of the historic quarter. The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola ('Little Spain'), while the western side belongs to Haiti. Here Latin America and the Caribbean meet on this mountainous island.
