Gibraltar
Gibraltar is situated at the southern tip of Europe, overlooking Africa. The city offers a blend of the modern and timeless, whilst the relaxing air of the Mediterranean and the winding and bustling streets reflect the cosmopolitan mix of the Gibraltarian culture. Gibraltar’s compact size means that facilities and attractions are all easily accessible. The town centre is easily navigable by foot, while the transfer time to hotels from all points of entry is rarely more than 15 minutes. Known for its maritime and military history, Rock touring takes visitors to the Great Siege Tunnels, Parson’s Lodge, the Apes Den, and the Moorish Castle, St Michael’s Cave, a dramatic natural grotto filled with stalagmites and stalactites, has an auditorium used to stage events throughout the year. The Gibraltar Museum traces the Rock’s history through its sixteen sieges. Other attractions include Europa Point, where it is possible to view two continents from one spot, Africa to the south and Europe to the north, while watching the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea meet. Legend dictates that the lost city of Atlantis could lie somewhere beneath these waters.
The Alameda Botanical Gardens were planted on instruction by Lieutenant Governor Sir George Don in 1816. Today, the gardens have a wooded appearance with Mediterranean pines and olives forming a canopy and many specimens of Dragon trees and Palms from the Atlantic islands. In the heart of the gardens lies the open air theatre which holds productions throughout the summer months. Casemates Square at the end of Main Street was once the site of public executions. Today it is a hive of activity with numerous cafes, bars and shops to delight visitors. Casements is also home to the Gibraltar Glass Factory where visitors can watch the glass blowers go about their craft. The city centre of Gibraltar is a walk through time. The city is protected at every junction by its original city gates and fortifications, which are protected by the Gibraltar Heritage Trust whose patron is HRH the Duke of Gloucester.
