La Coruna is a large port town with an attractive bay and fine beaches. For many visitors to the Galicia region, however, the main draw is the exquisitely preserved medieval cathedral city of Santiago de Compostela, centred on the shrine of St James (Santaigo). The shrine marks the end of a centuries old pilgrim route called the Way of St James, which continues to bring people from around the world to the splendid Baroque cathedral every year. The Praza do Obradoiro, the square where the cathedral stands, also contains the oldest hotel in the world, the Hostal dos Reis Catolicos, which is now a parador (state owned hotel). The entire Old Quarter is a honeycomb of architectural charm, perfect for exploring.
