San Sebastian is a fashionable seaside resort in the Basque region of Northern Spain on the Bay of Biscay, east of Bilbao, near the French frontier. La Concha beaches attract thousands of visitors every year. The old town and harbour occupy an isthmus between the mainland and Mount Urgull, on whose summit stands the 16th-century Mota Castle. Sights of interest include the City Hall, first opened in 1887 as a casino, the Gothic church of San Vicente (1507), the Baroque church of Santa María (1743-64), and the former convent of San Telmo (1531-51), now a Basque museum and the neo-Gothic cathedral of El Buen Pastor (The Good Shepherd). See the Plaza de la Constitucion, built in 1816 on the ruins of the old town square. The plaza is decorated with overhanging balconies, each donning numbers from when the square was used as a bullring -- tickets were sold for each numbered place along the square.
