Sometimes called the "Gibraltar of North America," Québec City is carved into the 350-foot cliff of Cape Diamond, situated at the confluence of the St Lawrence and Saint-Charles rivers in the southern part of Quebec province. It is a stronghold of French culture and remains fiercely French today, despite two centuries of English rule. From atop the city's surrounding walls (it is the only walled city on the continent north of Mexico), with massive ramparts that are dominated by the Citadel, a large fortress, you can look out at the imperial green-roofed towers of the legendary Château Frontenac.
