P&O Cruises ‘Astonishing’ New Show

P&O Cruises ‘Astonishing’ New Show

In the last series of the X-Factor, viewers often heard the acerbic Simon Cowell ask mediocre singing acts if they used to work on a cruise ship. Obviously the pop guru has not found time in his hectic schedule to take time off and witness the sea-change in cruise ship entertainment. Big-name shows on cruises certainly pull in the crowds – but do they really cut the mustard? 2018 looks set to be a blockbuster year for quality performances. Whilst its true passengers are somewhat a captive audience, production shows are now so cutting-edge they easily compare with land-based counterparts in famous theatres. West End ticket prices can often be astronomical but on cruise ships the entertainment’s free.

Like ships themselves, shows are varied, but in general, the larger the ship the more lavish the entertainment. Many cruise lines now engage the services of professional production companies for their shows ensuring entertainment is more tinsel-town, less Tin Pan Alley.

Having performed with Robbie Williams, singer Jonathan Wilkes has teamed up with BAFTA-winning presenter and entertainer Stephen Mulhern to produce ‘Astonishing’ - a revolutionary magic and illusion show that will be premiered on three P&O Cruises’ ships Britannia, Azura and Ventura this summer. ‘Astonishing’ combines the production talents of Stephen and Jonathan with the spectacular dance moves of leading choreographer Paul Domaine and the mind-blowing trickery of master illusionist Guy Barrett.

Stephen Mulhern said: “The ‘Astonishing’ show is like no other and I get goosebumps just thinking about it. Producing this show with Jonny is the culmination of a dream for me. I obviously don’t want to give anything away so all I will say is that it does exactly what it says on the tin and the audience should be prepared to be amazed.” Jonathan Wilkes added: “It’s been a long time in the making but the show is now ready and we know that it’s certainly going to be astonishing. We’ve partnered with some of the best in the business – Guy Barrett who is Mr Illusion and Paul Domaine who has worked with Kylie Minogue, Elton John and Stevie Wonder – and we’ve come up with a show that is truly ground-breaking.”

‘Astonishing’ is unlike anything seen before on a UK stage – let alone one on a cruise ship. Bringing together magic, dance, illusion and mystery, and using the latest technology of the giant LED screens in the theatres, the show will captivate guests who’ll gasp in disbelief as they are wowed with dazzling dance moves and seemingly impossible feats.
