P&O Cruises New Build

In September 2016 P&O Cruises took the industry by storm when it announced the construction of a blockbuster new ship to be delivered in 2020. With a displacement of 180,000 tons, this was hailed as the biggest vessel ever built for the British cruising market. Who would have thought that less than two years later Britain’s favourite cruise line would announce plans to build another 180,000-ton, 5,200-passenger leviathan?

The ship will be built by Meyer Werft at its shipyard in Papenburg, Germany and feature the company’s exclusive ‘green cruising’ design as one of the first generation of cruise ships to be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas, shipping’s most advanced fuel technology, which will significantly reduce air emissions. Due for delivery in 2022, this new vessel will help the cruise line meet the momentum in people choosing to cruise as they realise this holiday choice offers excellent value for money. The new ship is part of a fleet enhancement strategy with 19 new vessels set for delivery across Carnival Corporation brands (which include P&O Cruises and Cunard) between 2018 and 2022.

The build for our 2020 ship begins this spring and it will offer all generations of British guests the holiday of a lifetime on the next generation of P&O Cruises’ ships. In four years’ time when her sister ship is launched, adding an additional 22% capacity, we will see an even greater rise in the popularity of cruising across all demographics and all age ranges including both Millennials and Generation Xers. Many of them have already learned to appreciate holidays at sea by going on cruises with their families while growing up.
