St Kitts and Nevis (Basseterre) in detail

One of the British Leeward Islands, St Kitts is part of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, an independent state on the eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea.

St Kitts' dignified little capital, Basseterre, is easygoing. See its imposing cathedral before lingering over the purchase of attractive batiks. Climb past the lush sugar-cane fields to take in the sweeping views from the 17th century Brimstone Hill fortress and explore the miles of tropical rainforests, waterfalls, rock formations and fertile hills.
The island is volcanic in origin. Three groups of rugged volcanic peaks split by deep ravines dominate the topography of the main part of St Kitts; in the centre of the island, Mount Liamuiga, a dormant volcano rising to 1,156 m (3,792 ft), is the country's highest point. Liamuiga ("fertile land") is the Carib name for the peak, which was formerly called Mount Misery.
In the south-east, a low-lying peninsula with rolling hills, salt ponds, and golden beaches stretches towards Nevis.Upon discovering it in 1493, Christopher Columbus was so enchanted by this volcanic island's natural surroundings, that he named it after himself. The British established their first Caribbean colony on this island in 1623, and fought the French for control of both St. Kitts and Nevis for many years. To protect their territory, they built the imposing fort of Brimstone over the course of 100 years on the island of St. Kitts. Today St. Kitts and Nevis are together considered an Independent Member of the British Commonwealth.
