St Thomas lies about 75 miles east of Puerto Rico, 40 miles north of St Croix. Thirteen miles long and less than 3 miles wide, St Thomas rises out of the sea to a range of hills that runs down its spine. The highest peak, Crown Mountain, is 1,550 feet, but on St Peter Mountain, 1,500 feet, there is a viewpoint half way up reached by cable car with a viewing platform, bar and shops with great views around the island. Disembark at Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, either at Havensight, opposite to a shopping mall and entrance to the Paradise Point Cable Car, or at Crown Bay when the town is busy. In either case you will need a taxi to reach the downtown area or beaches. This is an extremely popular port for cruise ships in the winter so you may face being tendered in.The oldest structure on St.Thomas is the 17th century Danish Fort Christian, built by the Danes to protect the city from pirates - it has great views of the harbour and there are some beautiful plantation homes nearby. Other sites include Emancipation Park, the House of Legislature, Frederick Lutheran Church, Government House and Haagensen House. In addition to its historic treasures and scenic allure, St. Thomas is very popular for shopping - take advantage of the island's free port status. For swimming visit any of the many sandy beaches by taxi, especially the beautiful Magens Bay. It should be said that this is a very popular port with Americans and is geared to their tastes and much of the island has been built upon, especially on its eastern half.The fierce Carib Indians originally inhabited St.Thomas island but it was discovered by Columbus in 1493. Amongst the squabbles of Spain, England, France and Holland, Denmark acquired the islands in 1754 and established Charlotte Amalie, named after the Queen of Denmark. The USA bought St Thomas, St Croix and St John from the Danes for $25m in 1917.
