Cruise & Maritime Voyages specialises in adults-only, no-fly cruises aimed almost exclusively at older British couples and singles. Boasting classical lines, the perennially popular Marco Polo first entered service in 1966 but has undergone a series of refits, the most recent in 2008. The ship’s vintage adds character which appeals to many passengers as does the classic profile, traditional dark hull, teak decks and authenticity of a ‘proper’ ship. Her deep draught and stabilizers give a comfortable ‘ride’ in boisterous seas; and the vessel is well-maintained.

This 800-passenger ship has 15 different grades of cabins. The choice ranges from rather compact Standard Inside cabins to Deluxe Oceanview Suites with separate living room and marble bathroom. Ranked according to cabin size, deck and position, some have obstructed views and there are no balcony cabins. Generally well laid-out with light décor and generous storage space, some have beds in an L-shaped configuration; while in others the two beds can be pushed together to form a double, but comparative cabin size and configuration cannot be determined from the deck plan.

The Waldorf restaurant’s is open for breakfast and lunch on an open-seating basis, while there are two sittings at dinner. True to cruise tradition, afternoon tea and late-night snacks also feature on board. Cuisine is of a consistently high standard and appeals to British tastes. Marco’s Bistro is the informal, open-seating alternative for buffet-style meals and opens onto the pool deck at the stern, so guests can enjoy their meals outdoors, weather permitting.

The Marco Polo Lounge is configured theatre-style for the nightly shows which are committed, enthusiastic and engaging, if not West End calibre.  In addition there’s live music in several venues in the evenings such as in the spacious Captain’s Club with its contemporary décor and the smaller Columbus Lounge which is classy and clubby with some attractive maritime artefacts on display. With doors opening on to the open deck, Scott’s Bar has a dance floor and hosts late-night entertainment. Another nice place to chillax is the Palm Garden where big windows afford great views of the ocean. There’s also the well-stocked Livingston library, Nansen card room and Jade Wellness Centre.

The fact that this is a vintage vessel should not be a deterrent for those looking for a truly British cruise experience. We rate the outdoor swimming pool as well as the traditional walk-around promenade on Amundsen Deck. We also like the ‘soap opera’ cruises when cast members are on board; as well as the ‘Dad’s Army Legends’ cruise which includes original stars from the TV series.
