Montego Bay in detail

Montego Bay, Jamaica's busy little second city on the northwest coast, owed its past prosperity to butter, sugar and bananas in turn - but today it is tourism. The heart of Montego Bay is Sam Sharpe Square.

It is named in honour of the slave who led the bloody "Christmas Rebellion" of 1831, which helped to expedite emancipation on Jamaica. The square is a popular gathering spot, where vendors offer refreshments, snacks and T-shirts. Montego Bay has some excellent examples of Georgian architecture, a style emphasizing classic proportions.
A favourite is the Town House, built in 1765 for a wealthy sugar planter.Outside Montego Bay discover the famous (and crowded!) Doctors Cave beach or even to try some gentle river-rafting on the Martha Brae. Dunn's River Falls is a must. Located just west of downtown Ocho Rios, the cool mountain waters plunge 600 feet to smooth limestone beds, then stream under the roadway before mingling with the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Explore a little of the scenery and culture with a visit to he 18th century Jamaica of plantation houses like the famous Rose Hall, or to the Appleton Sugar Estate. Rose Hall may well be the most renowned estate on the island. The opulent edifice was built between 1770 and 1780 by John Palmer. Annie Palmer, the estate's second mistress, brought great notoriety with deeds ranging from cruelty toward slaves to the murder of her three husbands.
