Alexandria in detail

Aptly titled ‘the Pearl of the Mediterranean’ on the city’s official website, Alexandria is only two hundred kilometres from Egypt’s capital, Cairo, and is the second largest city in the country.

Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria is home to awe inspiring Roman amphitheatres and a lighthouse that was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Nowadays, the city has plenty of surviving monuments to be discovered including some incredible palaces such as the Montaza palace, and more contemporary buildings that are equally stunning. The city’s architecture is not all there is to be discovered, either; the old ancient library has recently been refurbished and is well worth a visit.

Alexandria is a truly beautiful city and is very popular with those who want all the atmosphere of a large Egyptian city without the hustle and bustle of nearby Cairo. With its gorgeous views and sandy beaches, this is definitely a stopover not to miss.
