Emerald Waterways was founded by the luxury river cruise specialist Scenic Tours to offer a four-star product operating on custom-built five-star ships.

There are currently four Emerald ‘Star Ships’ which were launched between 2014 and 2015. Emerald Sky; Emerald Star; Emerald Sun and Emerald Dawn are sister-ships which, along with the similar Emerald Destiny launching in 2017, have identical specifications. These vessels sail on the Danube, Rhine, Moselle and Main rivers. Also being introduced in 2017 are Emerald Liberté which has been custom designed for France’s Rhône River and Emerald Radiance which has been specifically designed for the Duoro River in Portugal.

The 'Star Ships' are at the forefront of modern, almost minimalist, design and offer spacious Owner's One Bedroom Suites, Grand Balcony Suites and Emerald Panorama Balcony Suites with either balconies or innovative full-size drop-down windows. Emerald Staterooms on Riviera Deck have picture windows that don’t open.

The modern-styled Horizon Lounge is dominated by black, white and gray decor with colourful chairs and settees. This chic room is the epicentre of the vessel's entertainment and enrichment; it is also where afternoon tea is served. At the front of the lounge is a bank of bar tables that look out over the bow. Further forward is an outdoor terrace with tables where passengers can enjoy light breakfasts and lunches.

Each ‘Star Ship’ has a heated indoor infinity pool with small bar at the stern on Horizon Deck. Atop the pool there’s a retractable roof which allows for this space to be transformed into a cinema in the evening (on Emerald Radiance the indoor pool is replaced with a Serenity Pool on the Sun Deck).

When it comes to dining the ‘star ships’ offer a selection of options including al-fresco light bites on the Terrace and five-course à la carte dining featuring regional cuisine in Reflections Restaurant on Vista Deck. As well as offering complimentary beer and soft drinks, the sommelier selects quality wines from local and regional vineyards which are offered complimentary at lunch and dinner. On selected days there’s a barbecue on Sun Deck.

One aspect of Emerald Cruises we particularly appreciate is their all-inclusive nature. Return flights from a selection of UK airports are included as are tips both on board and on land; plus unlimited Wi-Fi and alcoholic and soft drinks at lunch and dinner. A complimentary excursion is offered in each port; ‘Emerald Plus’ experiences which look deeper into a destination or culture are also included in the price, and once each cruise a complimentary active tour is always a popular choice.
