The longest-serving ship in the Marella Cruises fleet, Spirit cruise ship sails to the Eastern Mediterranean and Adriatic all year round.
- Ship in Detail
- Deck Plans
Spirit is the longest serving ship in Marella Cruises fleet and being one of the smaller ships there is a homely feel to it. The staff treat you like one of their own which leaving customers booking time and time again because of the outstanding service.
Spirit was originally built for Holland America Line and was inaugurated as Nieuw Amsterdam in 1983. With such a pedigree there’s a lot of teak deck space and wrap-around promenade. Renamed Thomson Spirit in 2003, she is now the longest-serving member of the fleet. This 1,254-passenger ship is as popular now as it’s ever been and part of that appeal is the homely feel. A refurbishment in 2014 saw balconies added to 19 suites and deluxe cabins on Deck 9; as well as new décor in cabins and upgrades to Raffles Bar and Broadway Show Lounge.
There are 10 categories of accommodation. These range from 139 to 172 sq ft Inside and Outside cabins; 204 sq ft Deluxe cabins; 279 to 290 sq ft Suites as well as a 450 sq ft two-room Presidential Suite. All Deluxe cabins on Deck 9 have balconies and Suites on Deck 7 and 9 have an attractive trellis-style room divider. There are also Inside and Outside cabins on Decks 2 and 3; while four cabins, forward on Deck 7, are wheelchair accessible. The colour palette throughout all cabins boasts muted shades of cream, brown and orange combined with blonde wood that gives a sense of space.
The main dining room is the light and airy Compass Rose which offers open-seating breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Sirocco’s is a cosy à la carte option for romantic dinners with an imaginative seven-course menu for a very reasonable supplement. The buffet-style Lido Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and occasionally the chefs lay on themed nights featuring Indian curries and Tex-Mex. Breakfast omelettes, lunchtime barbecues, salads, pizzas and burgers are served on the open deck Lido Terrace Grill. A good value 24-hour room service menu is available that includes English breakfast, pizzas and club sandwiches.
The Broadway Show Lounge stages revues featuring West End musical favourites, as well as guest stars from the small screen and big stage. The sophisticated Horizons Bar, with inlaid wooden dance floor and panoramic windows, features cabaret and live music. The Explorers' Lounge is an airy nautical-themed venue that's used for gentle daytime pursuits such carpet bowls. Around the corner from Raffles piano bar is the small casino. High Spirits is the place to go for bingo or line-dancing classes; after dark this becomes the nightclub and is a magnet for party animals.
We really like the 200-seat cinema with three screenings each day of modern classic and recently released films. There’s an adults-only pool with adjoining whirlpool, a kid’s-only pool as well as the Main Pool for all the family. There’s also the Oceans Spa and Beauty Salon. The Kid’s Club is open about four hours a day, depending on the season, and gives children aged three to 11 the chance to meet new friends.
