Alghero in detail

Due to its fantastic location on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, Alghero was built around what was once a fortified port. Much of Alghero’s historic architecture is still viewable today, one of the main and most enticing features of the city.

Despite the recent increases in tourism to Sardinia, Alghero has managed to retain a characteristic Catalan culture. The 16th Century Catalan city walls can still be seen along the city’s beautiful coastline. Don’t be fooled, though – the old town is buzzing with new life, the streets behind the cathedral filled to the brim with quaint cafés and shops. Outside of the old town Alghero is crammed with bars and restaurants to suit all tastes although, being so close to the sea, fish and seafood are of course a firm favourite on every menu.

All in all, Alghero is a great place to visit – it’s definitely not short of charm!
