Sophia Loren has christened all recent MSC Cruises’ ships and the 3,502-passenger MSC Preziosa was no exception when the iconic Italian actress assumed the role of Godmother at the naming ceremony in Genoa in 2013. This, the fourth and final vessel in the Fantasia Class, boasts grand, Swarovski crystal-studded staircases, Murano glass, white marble floors and opulent sculptures everywhere. It's important to note that, while English is the main onboard language, MSC predominantly attracts passengers from mainland Europe meaning announcements are made in five languages.
Nearly 65 percent of cabins have balconies with high dividing screens. Cabin sizes range from 129 sq ft Oceanview and 139 sq ft Inside cabins to 570 sq ft Executive and Family Suites on the stern of Deck 12. The two Royal Suites, aft on Deck 16, are 559 sq ft. A total of 45 cabins cater to disabled passengers, including two suites. A standout feature is the Yacht Club, an exclusive ‘ship within a ship’ haven that offers 69 cabins and suites; a 24-hour concierge; butler service; dedicated restaurant; bar; lounge; sun deck and small pool and separate lift to the Aurea Spa.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the two main dining rooms - the Golden Lobster and L'Arabesque - both of which offer two assigned seatings in the evening. Open 20 hours a day, the self-service buffets are Maya and Inca, both of which offer all-day meals and casual dinners. The minimalist Eataly is an outlet of the Turin-based chain that promotes Italy’s slow-food cooking movement; while the sophisticated Ristorante Italia serves an elegant à la carte menu.
The 1,600-seat Platinum Theatre stages visual shows for the international audience such as Alice in Wonderland. With 10 bars, passengers never have to stroll too far for a Prosecco or a Peroni. These include the Green Sax jazz bar; chic El Dorado piano bar; and the large Safari Lounge that hosts smaller shows and has a dance floor. There’s a full programme of activities for kids centred on the DOREMI Castle aqua-park plus a weekly poolside flash-mob; and Tiki bar for fruit drinks. Vertigo is a 394 ft slide that twists and turns from a 42 ft high launch pad taking thrill-seekers on a twisting descent that includes a 30 ft transparent stretch over the side of the ship. Also with adrenalin-junkies in mind, a Formula 1 race car simulator is superb fun.
We recommend the Aurea Spa which includes a new thermal area with a sauna, steam and frigidarium ice room that's not featured on other Fantasia-class ships. The larger of the two pools is the Aqua Park pool which has water jets and cascades; the other is in La Playa Preziosa with sliding roof and whirlpools.
