San Diego is southern California's second largest city boasting miles of white sand beaches and a colourful past dating back to 1769. Located on San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean, the city began as a remote Spanish mission and you will find reminders of its Spanish and Mexican heritage in architecture, names, cuisine and buildings.

Later it came to be dominated by navy and marine bases - this is the base for the US Pacific Fleet. More recently, San Diego has established itself as a leader in scientific research and as a near perfect place to live, retire, do business or visit as a tourist. Its year-round perfect climate and the beaches of Mission Bay would probably be enough to lure some people, but you can add to that its many attractions.Seaport Village is a re-creation of a seaport filled with shops and trendy restaurants while Balboa Park contains seven of the city's museums including the Museum of Art, the Museum of Man and the Aerospace Museum. Also in the Park is the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Other attractions in the city are Seaworld, the Old Town district and the Gaslamp Quarter nightlife. The Cabrillo National Monument is the site of the first European landing in California by Juan Cabrillo in 1542. Mexico (Tijuana), Palomar Observatory and the little town of La Jolla and its caves are nearby.
