Think of Norwegian Breakaway as an amusement park at sea, and you won't be far off the mark. This 3,963-passenger ship was launched in 2013 – a year before Norwegian Getaway – and reflects a New York vibe. Offering all the mega-ship bells and whistles, the casual atmosphere makes it a great choice for family cruises, particularly those who don't want to be beholden to strict dining times and venues.
The two-storey Splash Academy is home to high-tech games, a circus school and a small cinema. There are separate activities for kids aged 3 to 5, 6 to 9 and 10 to 12. Late-night group babysitting is also available. Entourage is a space for teens 13 to 17, and it has air hockey, video games, plush couches and flat-screen TVs; after dark it transforms into a teens-only nightclub.
Adults are in their element at the raunchy Broadway show ‘Rock of Ages’ which relives the anthems of the 1980's big-hair groups. They can also catch the ‘Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy’ dinner show which is an imaginative journey through a mystical jungle brought to life by an international cast of soaring aerialists, spine-bending contortionists and magnificent acrobats, jugglers and musicians. Devotees of Strictly Come Dancing will want to linger in The Manhattan Room dining room where sexy ballroom moves are performed on stage – a perfect overture to the sizzling ‘Burn The Floor’ show in the Breakaway Theatre.
After all this frenetic entertainment there’s the chance to chill out in the Mandara Spa. If love is in the air then the ultimate chill-out session of a Couples Swedish massage is hard to beat. Traditionalists can take in the ocean views along the Waterfront, a quarter-mile promenade on both port and starboard sides and wrapping attractively around the stern which is lined with restaurants and shops. Love doesn’t need to be in the air but it often is at the Bliss Ultra Lounge where professional DJs keep the dance floor filled until the small hours. If things get a bit frosty then couples should head to the unique arctic-like frozen chamber that’s SVEDKA and Inniskillin Ice Bar where the counter, seating and glasses are made entirely from ice, so too are the sculptures of New York landmarks.
NCL went all-out in designing the AquaPark aboard Norwegian Breakaway which spans four decks. We just know kids will pester parents to get on the five multi-storey waterslides, one of which is the fastest drop slide at sea. For those who like their water activities on the milder side, there are two traditional swimming pools, along with a special Spongebob Squarepants-themed pool area for the kids.
