This 704-passenger ship is unlike any other in the P&O Cruises’ fleet in that it is a relative minnow. Perfect for those who like their ships intimate and cruises that head to places larger ships bypass, this adults-only ship overflows with country-house charm. Originally built in 2001 and refurbished in 2011, this vessel was recently deployed for the ‘social impact’ cruise line Fathom on Dominican Republic and Cuba cruises out of Miami. Many passengers will welcome the news that Adonia will rejoin P&O Cruises in June offering sailings from Southampton.

There are four main dining venues on Adonia. The Pacific Restaurant provides open-seating breakfast and lunch, as well as fixed-seating dinner in two sittings. The Conservatory is the ship's casual buffet-style indoor-outdoor venue for breakfast and lunch and on selected evenings for dinner. The delightful Ocean Grill features fresh, modern British cuisine conceived by Marco Pierre White; while Sorrento, with its dazzling white decor, is the place to go for Italian specialities.

P&O has included several of its much-loved trademarks from other cruise ships in Adonia. These include the Crow's Nest Bar; decked out in a palette of navy blue and beige, with superb panoramic views; and Anderson's Bar with comfy leather chairs and wood-panelling that boasts the ambiance of a gentleman’s club. There is a new Glass House, outfitted in pale mauves and shades of grey, under the direction of wine connoisseur Olly Smith offering unusual wines and ‘wine flights’ for full appreciation of grape varietals.

There’s ballroom dancing, revue-style shows and cabaret in the Curzon Lounge as well as live music in the Crow’s Nest Bar but this is not a ship for night owls. There’s also a delightful library with an excellent collection of books and card room. On deck there’s the Crystal Pool with bar, two Jacuzzis, shuffleboard, deck games and golf nets.

There are several grades of accommodation ranging from compact, 158 sq ft Inside Staterooms; 165 sq ft Oceanview and 206 sq ft Premium Oceanview Staterooms; to 216 sq ft Balcony Staterooms and 322 sq ft Mini-Suites. There are also Suites ranging from 750 to 932 sq ft with wrap-around balconies.

Without doubt, Adonia is small but perfectly formed and has long been one of our favourite P&O Cruises’ ships. We really like the sweeping staircase that opens into the lobby, the stylish library with a faux fireplace and trompe l'oeil ceiling. Other favourites are the Oasis Spa with views over the bow and the two alternative restaurants with sweeping vistas over the vessel’s wake.
