It is generally accepted that P&O invented cruising following its founding in 1837. The company, then known as the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, placed an advert in a Scottish newspaper for a round-trip voyage using the company’s burgeoning fleet of merchant ships. The rest, as they say, is history.
Launched in 2010 by ‘Strictly’ judge Darcey Bussell, Azura offers a swanky vision of a traditional P&O Cruises’ ship. As a slightly newer sister to Ventura, this 3,100-passenger ship incorporates several innovations including the ‘SeaScreen’ above the Aqua Pool which shows recently released movies. However the core values of a classic voyage, where the ambiance is very social, helped by friendly British officers who mingle with passengers, have been upheld. The dress code is more relaxed which reflects the unstuffy vibe on board. There are no fewer than 35 cabin categories but in reality there are just five types of accommodation ranging from Inside cabins to Penthouse suites – plus two types of single-occupancy cabins.
Kids are in their element at the Aqua Pool and Coral Pool which are dedicated for families. In the Reef children's clubs there’s also a paddling pool and a ball pool at the Beach Hut (for two to four-year-olds). Despite its modernity, Azura is no floating theme park – there’s universal appeal for those putting their toe in the water for the first time and traditional cruisers alike.
With its sophisticated decor, the menu at Epicurean boasts the finest cuts of organically-reared meat, and the best seafood and fish from British shores. Michelin starred Chef Atul Kochhar has created the menu and trained the on-board chefs in the contemporary Indian restaurant Sindhu; and wine guru Olly Smith has created the relaxed concept of the Glass House with its eclectic wines and tasty small bites.
Amongst the bars on board, Brodie's offers a variety of entertainment including quizzes and football matches, as well as live music and karaoke in the evening. The Planet Bar, high up on Deck 18, is a stylish watering hole where each evening a plasma wall showcases the wonders of the world. Grown-ups love the adults-only enclave – The Retreat – while within the Oasis Spa; the Oasis Villa is an exclusive-use area with private whirlpool spa.
We can vouch for the ‘Food Heroes’ cruises which include cooking demonstrations, masterclasses, hosted dinners, book signings, Q&A sessions and food or wine related shore excursions with P&O’s celebrity chefs.
