Akureyri in detail

With a miniscule 18,000 inhabitants, the city of Akureyri is a paradise – and largely untouched by human feet. The fresh seafood caught in the nearby waters is pollution and additive free, making for some of the best cuisine on earth.

Aside from all the fishy business, Akureyri offers a phenomenal variety of activities, festivals and events for such a small and peaceful region. From September through to April visitors may well be able to catch a glimpse of the most jaw-dropping spectacle on earth: the Northern Lights. Back on land there is a whole host of attractions, from botanical gardens to historic towns. The Akureyri Church, Akureyrarkirkja, is an absolute treasure and is far more beautiful in real life than in any catalogue!

Small in size but huge in character, Akureyri is one of Iceland’s – and indeed the world’s – most understated spots, but definitely not a place to miss out on.
