Tromso in detail

Tromso is the largest city above the Arctic Circle and is the site of the Arctic Cathedral, an astounding church which can be seen glistening in the "Midnight Sun", the planetarium and the old districts with beautiful wooden houses.

The town is very much the Arctic's cultural centre and there are plenty of museums, cafes and even a brewery with a basement beer hall to be visited. See the stunning coastal views from Mt Storsteinen, reached by cable-car.Founded during the 13th century, Tromso developed slowly as a fishing village with a single church and eventually became the main centre for barter trade with Russia.

Six centuries later, it also became the "Gate to the Arctic" when Roald Amundsen and Friedtjoff Nansen used Tromso as the starting point of their famous expeditions into the far north. Even today, present Arctic voyagers commence their adventures in the city also known by the Norwegians as the "Paris of the North".
