Along with her sister ships Regal Princess and Majestic Princess, Royal Princess represents Princess Cruises next generation of cruise ships

At a celebrity-studded ceremony in Southampton in July 2013, the Duchess of Cambridge christened this 3,600-passenger ship with much fanfare. Inside this most sophisticated ship the central atrium is 50 per cent larger than on previous Princess ships. Three-decks high, this nexus of dining, lounging and entertainment is a social hub. Passengers ascend and descend the marble-swathed spiral staircases before choosing perhaps to indulge in a glass of Prosecco in Bellini’s followed by a pizza fresh from the oven in Alfredo’s; in the afternoon they can select from 250 blends of tea in the International Café or be tempted at the Gelato ice-cream parlour; later in Crooners there’s a choice of over 75 different martinis to whet the appetite.
There are 1,780 staterooms which fall into five different grades: 36 Suites, which are made up of 14 Owner’s Suites; 14 Penthouse Suites; and 8 Premium Suites. There are 314 Mini-Suites; 358 Deluxe Balcony cabins; 730 Standard Balcony cabins; and 342 Inside cabins. Each accommodation type features upholstered headboards; generous wardrobe space; refrigerator and a 42-inch television with complimentary films.
The Allegro Dining Room has set-table companions and assigned seating (usually at 6pm and 8.15pm); the Symphony and Concerto Dining Rooms operate open-seating dining between 5.30pm and 10pm. The Concerto Dining Room is open for breakfast and lunch every day. The hallmark Sabatini’s Restaurant features northern Italian cuisine and has a centrepiece wine tower showcasing vintages that would delight the most discerning wine-lover. The club-like ambiance of the Crown Grill is a perfect choice for premium Australian Sterling Silver steaks, chops and seafood served from the open kitchen. The Horizon Court has an action-station layout with food ‘venues’ such as a Japanese hibachi grill, rotisseries and carving stations.
The Princess Theatre stages specially-choreographed glitzy production shows. ‘Princess Live’ is an intimate performance venue where guests can watch ‘The Wake Show’, live cookery demonstrations, game shows, late-night comedy, and small-scale performances by the ship’s accomplished musicians. Late-night revellers can party the night away in Club 6 which is more like a bar with a dance floor than a disco.
For peace and quiet on sea days during school holiday cruises we recommend splashing out on the adults-only Sanctuary. Cabanas include personal television with headphones; sofas; robes and slippers; a fully-stocked mini-bar; as well as fruit and snacks. Less expensive are the blissfully-comfortable sun-loungers where Serenity Stewards bring cold towels and iced water.
