Port Everglades in Florida was bathed in a sea of red for the christening of Ruby Princess in November 2008. With former ‘Love Boat’ captain Gavin MacLeod in attendance, this new 3,084-passenger vessel was received to great acclaim. A refurbishment in 2015 added many new features, including SHARE from American chef Curtis Stone and an expanded ‘Chocolate Journeys’ programme. Even with the update, this ship still oozes a traditional vibe – one that appeals to cruisers looking for a conventional cruise experience.

There are six main types of cabins and configurations which come in 35 different price categories depending on space and location. Inside cabins range from 162 to 182 sq ft; Oceanview cabins are fairly compact at 158 to 179 sq ft; while the 231 sq ft Balcony cabins are highly prized – as are the 323 sq ft Mini-Suites which have a 37 sq ft balcony. Suites and Grand Suites range from 460 to 687 sq ft. It’s worth pointing out that many cabins on Emerald Deck 8 have a lifeboat obstructed view.

Dining is diverse, with three main dining rooms offering the same Personal Choice Dining Programme as that detailed for Emerald Princess and Crown Princess. The three specialty venues include SHARE – where diners can pass around charcuterie, handmade pastas, and twice-cooked duck at this contemporary restaurant; the Salty Dog Gastropub developed in collaboration with Ernesto Uchimura; and Crown Grill for succulent steaks and seafood. There are also eight causal eateries including the 24-hour Horizon Court Buffet and Bistro; Café Caribe; and the Trident Grill.

When it comes to entertainment, Princess Cruises has an exclusive partnership with Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz who combines music with stunning on-stage illusions in the show ‘Magic to Do’ which is a highlight of the action-packed revue-style shows in the Princess Theatre. The ‘Voice of the Ocean’ show brings the excitement of the popular television shows in the UK and USA to cruising. Selected singers are assigned a professional mentor who will meet with them during the cruise to rehearse with the Princess Band and back-up singers. On the last night of the cruise up to nine contestants perform in the final in the Princess Theatre.

Other highlights aboard Ruby Princess we like include the atrium which serves as the backdrop for some memorable moments such as the Champagne waterfall at the captain's welcome party; ‘Movies Under The Stars’ LED screen above one of the four swimming pools showing latest releases; and the Sanctuary for chilling out and pampering.
