Join Sound of Music for a cruise along three rivers as she sails from Vienna. See the beautiful cities of Grein, Linz and Passau on the Upper Danube. Visit historic Nuremburg, the lovely towns of Bamberg and Wurzburg, and Miltenberg on the River Main. Calls in Speyer and the Alsace capital Strasbourg complete your cruise as you head along the Rhine to Basel.
Holiday Itinerary:
Day 1 - Fly to Vienna today to board Sound of Music. Settle in, and enjoy your first dinner on board.
Day 2 - Spend today in Vienna. Discover the Austrian capital's elegant arcades, St Stephan's Cathedral and magnificent Hofburg Palace on our optional morning sightseeing tour, and perhaps head to the former imperial summer home, the Schonbrunn Palace, on an afternoon optional excursion before returning to Sound of Music for her early evening sailing.
Day 3 - Step ashore in Grein, which nestles on the bank beneath a towering castle, to see its elegant theatre (housed in what was once the town hall's granary) and enjoy a coffee in a riverside cafe. From here, Sound of Music will cruise to Upper Austria's prosperous capital, Linz. Wander the city's medieval quarter before dinner on board.
Day 4 - Discover Passau, at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers, on today's optional walking tour, before Sound of Music sails into beautiful southern Germany.
Day 5 - Majestic Regensburg's skyline of ancient spires greets us today. Enjoy an optional walking tour of the city's altstadt (old town), or an optional tour to Weltenburg monastery and its ancient brewery.
Later, Sound of Music sails to Kelheim, beneath 'Mad' King Ludwig's spectacular Befreiungshalle, before leaving the Danube behind to enter the Main-Danube Canal.
Day 6 - Nuremberg's half-timbered houses and narrow lanes seem unchanged by centuries of history. But, as this morning's included tour will reveal, the city was heavily and lovingly rebuilt after WW2. See the Rathaus (city hall), Kaiserburg fortress and the magnificent main square.
Day 7 - Beautiful Bamberg welcomes us today. Take the shuttle bus from the ship into the city-centre and discover a beautiful, much-photographed altstadt of little bridges, little islands and waterside houses before Sound of Music sails into the River Main this afternoon.
Day 8 - This morning Sound of Music stops in Wurzburg, an ancient prince-bishopric nestled beneath steep, vine-covered slopes. Enjoy an optional guided tour of the UNESCO-listed Residenz, a magnificent Baroque palace overlooking the city's altstadt (old town).
Day 9 - Miltenberg, a picture-book town of cobbled squares and half-timbered houses, lies on a forested bend of the River Main. Step ashore to explore, then return to Sound of Music for an afternoon and evening cruise past the soaring modern skyline of Frankfurt and on towards the Rhine.
Day 10 - After a first morning on the Rhine Sound of Music arrives in Speyer. Join our Tour Manager for an included walking tour, or join the optional excursion to Heidelberg and explore the 'Student Prince' city and the twisting streets and lanes that shelter below its imposing castle.
Day 11 - Sound of Music's final call is a short coach ride away from the Alsace capital, Strasbourg. Head into the city to discover it's sights and secrets from the waterways on an optional canal cruise, before you return to the ship for a special Farewell Dinner.
Day 12 - Bid farewell to Sound of Music and her crew, this morning, as you disembark in Basel and transfer to the airport to board your flight home.
