Royal Caribbean International is renowned for setting precedents. When they introduced Freedom of the Seas in 2006 it eclipsed all other cruise ships, not just in terms of size, but in innovation and daring. Two years later the third in the Freedom-class of ships – Independence of the Seas – was launched. This 3,634-passenger vessel underwent a refurbishment in 2013 when Giovanni’s Table, a large poolside movie screen and Cupcake Cupboard were added. The ship's Wi-Fi also got upgraded to the line's Voom system.

Located in the heart of the vessel is the Royal Promenade. At 445 ft long, this shopping, dining and entertainment boulevard is longer than a football pitch. Putting the central, glass and steel descending Entertainment Bridge to full effect, the nightly street parades using music, lasers and lights are a cavalcade of boisterous fun – none more so than the Dreamworks Parade when characters from ‘Madagascar’ and ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ are the main attraction. It’s all too easy to while away the day here by popping into the Dog and Badger Pub; Vintages Wine Bar; and Sorrento’s pizzeria.

In the Art Deco-style Alhambra Theatre, there’s a full-scale production of ‘Grease’ with an elaborate set and costumes for Danny and Sandy and their friends from Rydell High. Studio B, the onboard skating rink, is open for skating lessons and free skating during the day; whilst by night this venue stages a spectacular ice show. With a cast of sixteen professional skaters, it is one of the most enthralling shows at sea.

On the upper decks, there’s a FlowRider for surfing and body-boarding; the spectacular H2O Zone is a colourful wonderland of brightly-hued sculptures doubling as interactive fountains that spray, sprinkle and spurt water in every direction; this is transformed into an open-air nightclub. Two large hot tubs are cantilevered out from the sides of the ship and suspended above the ocean, and if this doesn’t get the adrenaline flowing, there’s a rock-climbing wall with 11 challenging routes.

Throughout the ship there are 21 categories of accommodation; amongst these are interior staterooms that look down onto the Royal Promenade. There are five grades of large family-focused accommodations over and above standard triples and quads.

Not all ships have drop-off nurseries that will take kids under the age of three. The Royal Tots and Royal Babies facility was added during the 2013 renovation and takes little ones as young as six months. This supervised care is staffed by trained professionals and is available day and night - allowing parents the chance to have some time on their own.
