This, the largest passenger ship afloat, is the third in the Oasis-class of blockbusters from Royal Caribbean. To say there’s something onboard for everyone is a massive understatement. The most revolutionary aspect of the design of this ‘incredible hull’ is the increased width of the superstructure which gave the maritime architects the ability to split the superstructure. This not only allows for a rich mix of accommodation grades but also for the creation of seven ‘neighbourhoods’ which proved so popular on Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas. It’s these themed areas – with their urban overtones - that really define the characteristics of this bustling city at sea.

Aboard Harmony of the Seas the wow-factor comes in spades. We think the entertainment is possibly the best at sea with production values now at levels previously unheard of aboard a cruise ship. There’s a full-scale production of the musical ‘Grease’ which is a faithful recreation of the original Broadway show; Studio B is the venue for ice shows that are dazzling in their staging and professionalism; while in the AquaTheatre acrobats, high-wire acts and jaw-dropping diving are choreographed to music.

This is a ship for the whole family – kids love the tie-up with ‘Dreamworks’ with Shrek, Puss in Boots, Kung Fu Pandas and other characters mixing and mingling throughout the day, never more so that at the colourful parades that are featured nightly in the Royal Promenade such as the ‘Totally Awesome 90s Street Party’. Adrenalin-junkies can take on the ‘Ultimate Abyss’ – the world’s tallest slide at sea which plunges 100ft through ten decks; kids of all ages have fun riding ‘The Perfect Storm’ – a trio of thrilling water slides; while others can conquer their fears on the Zip Line or Rock Climbing Wall.

Within this floating resort there are restaurants to suit all tastes: from the pricey but prestigious 150 Central Park; avant-garde Wonderland; popular Chops Grille; and Jamie’s Italian, to the Boardwalk Dog House; Sorrento’s Pizzeria; and the ever-popular Johnny Rockets for burgers. Other options include Izumi for sushi and sashimi; and Sabor for Mexican tapas and margaritas. Less busy suggestions are the Bistro in the adults-only Solarium and the Park Cafe in Central Park shrouded by real trees.

So whether you want your favourite cocktail mixed by robots in the Bionic Bar or a carousel ride in the Boardwalk, sing your heart out at karaoke in the ‘On-Air Club’ or quaff a Dublin Ice Tea in the Boot & Bonnet pub, the options are truly limitless aboard Harmony of the Seas. If ever a ship was a showstopper – this is it.
