Avonmouth lies on the south side of the Bristol Channel at the mouth of the river Avon and close to the entrance to the Severn Estuary. The docks were opened here in 1877 and Avonmouth has replaced nearby Bristol as one of Britain's busiest ports. The new Portbury Dock on the opposite side of the Avon was opened in 1977. The port gives access to the historical city of Bristol, Georgian Bath and the surrounding countryside of Somerset, Avon and Wiltshire.

The Avonmouth Cruise Terminal is part of the Port of Bristol situated on the northern side of the mouth of the River Avon where the river joins the Severn estuary, within Avonmouth. The cruise terminal is easily accessible by rail and the M5 motorway.
