No other cruise line has introduced new ships on such a massive scale as Viking River Cruises. Named after Norse gods and heroes, the innovative ‘Longships’ boast a new design that includes the first-ever two-room suites ever on a European river vessel; as well as cabins with full balconies, a feature made possible by a new cabin layout that includes offset main corridors. The delightful Aquavit all-weather indoor/outdoor terrace at their bow is a novel concept for river ships in Europe.

The phenomenal rise in the popularity of river cruising across the globe has been harnessed by Viking River Cruises who have launched an unprecedented 45 of these state-of-the-art vessels since 2012. Their fleet of Longships sail on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers, along with France's Rhone and Seine. There are also cruises on Portugal's Duoro which are operated by slightly smaller Longships.

Viking Buri, which cruises Burgundy and Provence, is identical to other Viking Longships on the rivers of France, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. The first thing you notice when you board is the amount of space, which is generous for a river vessel. The other unusual feature is the signature Nordic design with a contemporary twist. The restrained colour palette of ochre and taupe are blend with chromes and whites. The extensive use of glass enhances the serene views of the passing riverside. The double-height lobby is inlaid with marble and stairs lead to a mezzanine library and open decks.

The Aquavit Terrace is dotted with dining tables and comfy sofas, making it a great spot to relax on warm days when we like nothing better than enjoying breakfast or a light lunch while watching the countryside roll by. Glass doors can be rolled back to make the main lounge - with a horse-shoe shaped bar at one end, and floor-to-ceiling windows - even bigger. Directly below is the main restaurant, where the food is exceptional and menus often reflect specialities of the region through which the vessel is sailing. The sun deck is a popular retreat where passengers can be found relaxing in lounge chairs, playing shuffleboard or putting. After-dinner entertainment is fairly low-key – like all other river cruises – featuring a singer/keyboard player with occasional involves folkloric troupes. There’s one lift which only operates between the Upper Deck and Middle Deck; Wi-Fi is ship-wide and complimentary. Viking River Cruises are tailored for active adults who are interested in learning about the destinations. As each Longship is virtually interchangeable, you pick a route rather than searching for a particular ship.
