River Cruising in style and class with Avalon Artistry II

Owned by the Swiss-based Globus family of brands, Avalon Waterways can trace its roots back to 1928 but it was not until 2004 that the company launched its fleet of royal-blue river vessels. The ‘Suite Ship’ concept was inaugurated on Avalon Panorama which entered service in 2011. The European fleet now comprises twelve of these cutting-edge vessels. All Panorama Suites (nearly 80% of accommodation) and Staterooms feature ‘Comfort Collection’ beds, flat-screen satellite TV and ship-wide complimentary Wi-Fi; as well as bathrooms with full-sized showers.
These river vessels put the emphasis on the view from passenger accommodation with a unique layout of suites on two decks of every Avalon ‘Suite Ship’. The innovative design of the 200 sq ft Panorama Suites is brilliant in its simplicity and beds are angled to face the 11-ft wall-to-wall panoramic windows which open to create an open-air balcony. This unique feature means that these vessels have the largest standard windows in river cruising – 50% larger than the industry norm. This novel design does not apply to the 172 sq ft category D and E Deluxe Staterooms.
The Dining Room on Sapphire Deck offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, and on every cruise a local chef is brought on board to prepare a special dinner with signature dishes made from the freshest local ingredients, offering additional insight into the culture of the inspiring destinations. The Panorama Bistro serves tapas-style, Mediterranean dishes in a section of the main lounge, while continental breakfasts and al fresco lunches are available at the Sky Bistro atop the vessel. In 2017 ‘Avalon Fresh’ – a collection of wholesome menu options – will be introduced. Complimentary regional wines, beer and soft drinks are offered during lunch and dinner.
Surrounded by windows, the chic Panorama Lounge has cushioned rattan-inspired chairs and sofas, and a horseshoe-shaped bar. The lounge serves as a gathering place for entertainment, lectures and happy hours. Forward of this is a covered terrace which is perfect for enjoying the panoramic views with a coffee – never more so than when the vessel navigates deep locks. At the stern of the vessel is the smaller club lounge, where continental breakfast is served.
It’s not surprising Avalon Waterways won the Condé Nast Traveller award for the Top River Cruise Line in 2014. We particularly like the all-inclusive land programmes as well as the ‘wine appreciation’; ‘beer tasting’; ‘culinary arts’; ‘jazz’; ‘music’; ‘art’; and ‘history’ theme cruises.
