With a complement of just 676 passengers, Azamara Journey provides excellent service, a spacious pool deck, and relaxing public areas that are full of charm. Originally built in 2000, the vessel was one of two identical ships that heralded the arrival of this cruise line that was founded in 2007. A bow-to-stern renovation in 2016 saw the hull sporting a nautical dark blue colour; every cabin now has lighter, airier colours; while a sophisticated palette enhances the clubby charm of the original Edwardian-style decor.

The open-seating main dining room, Discoveries also received a makeover and the leather chairs have opalescent tones of cream and lemon. Here fresh, beautifully-presented local dishes are served with an Old World flair and rarely disappoint. Serving Italian culinary specialities, Aqualina is one of two speciality restaurants on board, the other being the steakhouse - Prime C, both of which have a supplement, but are always outstanding. For casual dining, the Windows Café has plenty of outdoor seating for breakfast and lunch in the sunshine. There’s also a Pool Grill; tapas bar and Mosaic Café.

Cabins are divided into four basic types: Club Interior at 158 sq ft; 170 sq ft Club Oceanview; Club Veranda at 170 sq ft with a 40 sq ft balcony; and Suites ranging from 266 to 560 sq ft. Suites are divided into four types: Club Continent Suites; Club Spa Suites; Club Ocean Suite; and Club World Owner's Suites. Passengers in these premium grades receive a variety of perks such as free dining in speciality restaurants, butler service and a full bar setup.

The Spirits Bar has winged-back chairs and a grand piano which comes into its own at the cocktail hour; as does the Discoveries Bar; after dinner, the Living Room is great for night caps accompanied by the live band. Shows in the Cabaret Lounge are hardly Broadway-level but are entertaining none the less. The Sun Deck has some of the best deck furniture at sea surrounding the pool. There’s also a holistic Sanctum Spa with private sun deck, thalassotherapy pool, lounge chairs and day beds.

For many, it’s Azamara Club Cruises’ ‘Destination Immersion’ concept that makes the difference. This includes sailing from port later than other ships, plus multiple overnight stays for getting a real flavour of the ports visited.

We like the fact that Azamara includes plenty of extras that other lines charge for, including wine and beer with lunch and dinner, speciality coffees and teas, self-service laundry, transportation from the ship to the town centre in most ports, and gratuities. This, combined with the complimentary ‘Azamazing Evening’ featured on every cruise; make this choice hard to beat.
