Christened by Angela Lansbury in 1995, Crystal Symphony has undergone several extreme makeovers since to ensure it’s at the vanguard of ultra-luxury cruising. Aboard this 960-passenger vessel passengers discover the ‘Crystal Difference’ – extraordinary service, abundant space and exceptional quality. This steadfast commitment to excellence has earned the company more ‘World’s Best’ accolades than any other cruise line, hotel or resort in history. With a generous and impressive selection of complimentary fine wines and premium spirits, as well as open bar service in all lounges and pre-paid gratuities, the difference is without doubt, crystal clear.
At just 202 sq ft, the Oceanview cabins are fairly small for a luxury ship but their bright décor and five-foot windows betray the constraints on space. Deluxe Veranda cabins are the same size but have an additional 44 sq ft balcony. Marble bathrooms are a masterstroke in design with twin sinks, powerful shower, and bathtub. All cabins have a lounge area where room-service meals can be enjoyed in private. Penthouse accommodation is just about the finest money can buy on the ocean waves.
The elegant Crystal Dining Room operates ‘Perfect Choice Dining’ where passengers can opt for assigned tables and tablemates at two seatings or choose ‘Dining by Reservation’, which allows them to pick their own tablemates and times. Two menus are offered each night – the ‘classic’ one features traditional fare, the ‘modern cuisine’ menu offers more daring dishes; both change daily. The incomparable Silk Road features signature dishes created by famed master-chef Nobu; and Prego serves specialties from the culinary colossus that is Italy. The casual Tastes restaurant on deck is a perfect spot to savour fresh tapas-style street food served family-style. The convivial Lido Café is ideal for breakfast and lunch; there’s also the convivial Bistro above the Crystal Plaza and Trident Grill on deck.
Production shows in the Galaxy Lounge are some of the best choreographed, most lavishly costumed, and technically exacting entertainment on the world’s oceans. Latest-release films are shown in the Hollywood Theatre; and the Avenue Salon is a perfect piano bar. The ‘Creative Learning Institute’ offers the chance to learn a foreign language; while the Crystal Spa offers a serene environment for those seeking indulgent pampering.
We highly rate Crystal’s ‘Experiences of Discovery’ programme where celebrated authors discuss their best-sellers, diplomats and politicians give insight into world events, while learned professors bring foreign cultures to life and scientists or explorers reveal the secrets of the natural world. While some lectures turn out to be less of a genteel romp through history, more brain aerobics, they are always fascinating.
