Queen Mary 2

The recently refurbished Queen Mary 2 is the only ocean liner to still offer regular Transatlantic voyages between Southampton and New York

Queen Mary 2 was christened with much fanfare in 2004 by Her Majesty, The Queen. Since then the 2,690-passenger Cunard flagship has enjoyed success and acclaim during cruises to Europe and the Caribbean; as well as regular transatlantic crossings and annual world cruises. In 2016 she underwent a multi-million pound bow-to-stern refurbishment that had the moniker ‘QM2 Remastered’. During this refit every stateroom and suite was restyled and 35 staterooms were added to Deck 13. Today this leviathan offers a vision of elegance and decadence that harks back the Golden Age of travel.

As the world's only ocean 'liner' in the true sense of the word, no one can fail to be impressed with its graceful and powerful appearance. When it comes to accommodation on Queen Mary 2, there’s a bewildering array of varying grades. Some travellers are content with a modest cabin, while others are prepared to splash out considerably more for a duplex penthouse suite complete with butlers tending to their slightest whim.

Restaurant allocation depends on cabin categories with the majority of passengers dining in the three-deck high Britannia Restaurant – unquestionably the most stunning room at sea. Passengers opting for Princess Grill Suites dine in the delightful Princess Grill which now boasts a regency colour scheme; while the top-of-the-range Queens Grill Suite passengers dine in the Art Deco splendour of the exclusive Queens Grill. For a supplement, all passengers can dine in the exquisite Verandah Restaurant. The redesigned King’s Court buffet is now proving far more popular.

Entertainment options are limitless. The Queen’s Room with its crystal chandeliers, has the largest ballroom at sea and is the perfect setting for elegant afternoon teas and Captain’s cocktail parties, not to mention the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ set. The Planetarium shows stunning films such as ‘Stars over the Atlantic’; ‘Infinity Express’; and ‘The Search for Life’. Spanning two decks, the Royal Court Theatre with its soaring proscenium arch and thrust stage, affords unimpeded sightlines for the glitzy revue-style shows. This is also the venue for lectures by renowned speakers in the ‘Cunard Insights’ programme as well as headline entertainers which regularly feature during transatlantic crossings.

Cruise Direct have no hesitation in recommending this iconic ship, never more so than for the opportunity to cross the Atlantic Ocean in grand style – you can even take your dog which will be housed in the dedicated kennels. There is no other vessel that can compare with Queen Mary 2 and the formal dress code on many evenings is a reflection of the old world glamour that is inherent in the ships very fabric.
