New Orleans in detail

Situated along the Mississippi River, New Orleans is the cultural centre of Louisiana. This laid back city blends legendary jazz with ornate architecture and offers world renowned cuisine - Cajun to Creole. In its colourful history, many flags have flown over New Orleans - the French, the Spanish, the Confederate States of America and the United States of America - although originally, the land we now call New Orleans was inhabited by Indians, the Houma tribe.

In 1803 Thomas Jefferson paid Napoleon $15 million to obtain New Orleans and the entire Louisiana Territory. Fortunately for today's visitors, the French Quarter, also known as Vieux Carre, retains its historic French charm in its well-preserved buildings, courtyards and gardens. This is the place to dine on French Creole cuisine and tap your toes to the sound of jazz. Here you will find Jackson Square (1718) 'surrounded by St. Louis Cathedral, the Cabildo, Pirate's Alley, and Cafe Du Monde or the French Market and Farmers' Market.
You can walk down Bourbon Street and you'll hear pianos, laughs, blues guitars and zydeco music. There also lots of museums including the Louisiana State Museum, featuring the 1850's House displaying period furnishings, the Old U.S. Mint with Mardi Gras and jazz exhibits. Other highlights include Georgian-style Hermann-Grima House, the Wax Museum and the Aquarium of the Americas. Further afield try an Airboat ride through the bayous and swamps or a visit to a Plantation.
