With its Union Flag livery and two smart blue funnels, the new P&O Cruises’ flagship is without doubt a ‘game-changer’ in British cruising. The 3,600-passenger Britannia was christened by Her Majesty, The Queen in 2015. Designed by world-leading interior design experts, the main colour palette is a stylish black, cream and bronze with hints of various shades of blue to render a clean and crisp aesthetic. Passengers get their first appreciation of the dramatic architecture and design as they enter the three-deck high Atrium with its elegant sweeping staircase connecting Decks 5, 6 and 7, from which many public rooms emanate. Dominating this expansive space is ‘Star Burst’ - part chandelier, part sculpture.
Spanning seven decks, cabins and suites come in 35 categories from Inside cabins to lavish Suites and reflect a fresh and clean palette of calming greens or soft blues and respect nautical traditions whilst being equipped with sophisticated technology you would expect to find in a deluxe hotel. There are 27 single cabins, some with veranda.
The expansive Meridian, Peninsular and Oriental restaurants offer Freedom and Club dining options. Specialty restaurants range from the sublime Epicurean with its understated glamour, to pan-Asian Sindhu where the myth that Indian cuisine is endless variations of Chicken Tikka Masala is dispelled. There’s a superb selection of wines on offer in the Glass House and bountiful snacks at the Market Café. For devotees of ‘MasterChef’ the Cookery Club is run by celebrity chef James Martin who appears on several Britannia cruises throughout the year to offer hands-on tuition in cooking techniques and presentation skills.
The elegant Crystal Room, with its white leather chairs and glistening chandelier, hosts decadent evening balls and entertainment from live bands and singers to dance lessons during the day. The Limelight Supper Club combines great food with cabaret-style entertainment from well-known artistes. On selected dates, glitz and glam hits the ocean waves when ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ cruises are an undoubted highlight. The Headliners Theatre is the venue for West-End review-style shows packed with amazing choreography, tribute acts, and recently-released films.
We appreciate the modern vibe of Britannia and welcome such enhancements as Master Pâtissier Eric Lanlard's outstanding Afternoon Tea in Epicurean; the exclusive Retreat outdoor spa area with comfortable sun-loungers; as well as the selection of 20 artisanal gins in the Crow’s Nest Bar.
