Family-friendly Ventura is P&O Cruises’ version of Princess Cruises’ Grand-class ships. This 3,092-passenger ship was launched by Dame Helen Mirren in spectacular style in 2008. This is the workhorse of the company’s extensive series of short-break cruises as well as a wide variety of cruises to the Mediterranean, Canary Islands and the Caribbean. It is a great choice for those putting their toe in the cruising scene for the first time as well as seasoned cruisers.
The ship underwent a refurbishment in 2013 when 18 single cabins (12 outside and six inside) were added. Ventura offers eight types of accommodation and as this ship is targeted at families and multi-generational groups, a large number of cabins have sofas that convert into a bed for a third person, or beds that pull down from the ceiling. There are many different accommodation categories, according to size and location, while nearly 900 feature balconies. Grades of cabins include: Inside, Outside, Balcony, Family Suites and Suites.
Of the three main dining rooms, Bay Tree offers fixed seating dining with assigned tables at 6.30pm or 8.30pm, while Cinnamon and Saffron have Freedom Dining allowing open seating between 6pm and 10pm. Dinner at The Epicurean is akin to splashing out on a memorable meal in some trendy restaurant on land that’s garnered a bevy of accolades. Sindhu at East is under the direction of Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar who has created the menu which showcases his sublime fusion of Indian and British cuisine. The Glass House is a popular gastro-pub under the direction of wine connoisseur Olly Smith where ‘wine flights’ are offered to accompany the delicious small and large plates of ‘tapas-style’ comfort food.
Perched high above the sea at the stern on Sky Deck the Metropolis Bar has panoramic views out to sea and is a perfect hideout to enjoy cocktails. The urban warehouse-themed English pub, the Exchange is packed from morning until the small hours with ‘Name That Tune’ competitions, live bands, adult karaoke and sporting events on large screens. The Cuban-themed nightclub Havana is packed on ‘Boogie Nights’, so too when ‘Soul & Motown’ is the theme. In the Arena Theatre there twice-nightly hi-energy performances which capitalise on the fad for all things dance.
Perfect for chilly days, the Beachcomber Pool on Lido Deck has a retractable roof which permits swimming in all weather and we recommend this as a delightful spot to relax in the whirlpools. We also like the Laguna Pool which has plenty of deck space and sun-loungers – while the small plunge pool at the aft of Sun Deck is a haven during school holiday cruises.
